NOBU HOTEL IBIZA BAY

IbizaSpain

Curiously, despite Ibiza's long-standing prominence as a playground for Europe's chic set, there are few truly chic five-star hotels. So when Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay opened at the end of June, on Talamanca Bay on the edge of Ibiza Town, it sent waves of excitement rippling around the island.

It's set beside one of Ibiza's best beaches, a stretch of white sand with turquoise waters, just over the promontory from the marina (easy access for the superyachties) and the cobbled Old Town. Two swimming pools overlook the beach, clean-lined and smart with double daybeds and Balinese cabanas.

Design is sympathetic to its White Isle setting - whites and natural woods, with flecks of ocean blue and Nobu gold here and there. The 152 rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and generous balconies with views of the bay. At night you drift off to sleep to the sound of the waves and footsteps on the wooden boardwalk below (this is Ibiza, after all; there's always someone awake).

Then there is the five-star fantasyland stuff: Ibiza's first Six Senses Spa, a John Frieda hair salon, a nail bar, a fitness centre, a boutique selling quintessential Ibiza wares at quintessential Ibiza prices. There's a 24-7 on-call mixologist, if you want to get the party started in your room.

But the biggest buzz of all is, of course, about the hotel's four gourmet restaurants, which raise the bar for fine dining even here, where the food is world-class. Chef Nobu Matsuhisa's famous Japanese fusion dishes, such as sticky-and-sweet black-cod miso, are served at the hotel's signature Nobu restaurant. Then there's Peyotito (the second outpost, fresh from Notting Hill) for a vibrant journey through Mexican flavours, Chambao for fresh seafood and traditional chiringuito vibes, and Celicioso, which serves up superfood salads and gluten-free goodness. In response to the Ibiza crowd of late risers and up-all-nighters, there are no fixed mealtimes - breakfast goes on all day, supper starts whenever you like.

Verdict: Nobu Hotel Ibiza Bay is a superluxe escape from the throbbing club scene, set bang in the middle of the action.
